Calculate manufacturing operation costs
A part may pass through several processes. Give each operation its own time and cost basis instead of applying a single machine rate to every activity.
Cost each operation appropriately
Turning, milling, drilling, cutting, forming and manual work can be entered as separate operations. Specify setup time, cycle time and machine or labour costs for each step. Selecting a process name does not automatically establish its production time.
Spread one-off costs across the batch
Worked example: 30 minutes of setup at €80/h costs €40 per batch, or €2 per part for 20 parts. Six minutes of additional machining at €80/h costs €8 per part. This operation therefore contributes €10 per part before other costs.
Include subcontracting and supporting work
Inspection, deburring, coating, transport and packaging may affect the price. Use your own times or supplier quotes. Avoid counting labour or overhead twice when a rate already includes it.
Frequently asked questions
Does choosing bending automatically calculate bending time?
No. The operation needs its own time and cost basis. Your inputs must account for material, geometry, tooling and machine conditions.
Do I need an account for this calculation?
The public unit cost calculator is free without an account. Saved Pro quotes and business resources have separate access requirements.
